Lemi Ponifasio, an artist from the Pacific who has revolutionized how we understand theatre and dance brings together on stage a Mapuche singer and composer and a flamenco bailaora [dancer] to talk to us about two worlds through their bodies and stories.
Love to Death is one of his latest creations with the Chilean platform for critical reflection, MAU Mapuche, through which he touches on issues ranging from the Mapuche people to nature, female identity, and power. Its central characters are two women who bring to the stage their talent and bodies, tools they use for speaking to us about the communities they come from and, at the same time, about the history and future of Chile.
From the technical view, this is a work with highly detailed visuals provided by only one projector. The staging is sparse, there are only two performers, one projector and two stage effects; an “LED pipe drop” and a 10-liter blood effect. There is no room for mistakes…
As the technical director, besides supervising all technical needs for the show for each tour, I designed and built both stage effects.
The show has performed in The REDCAT Theater, Los Angeles; The Walker’s Performing Arts, Minneapolis; Grec Festival, Barcelona and the International Theater Amsterdam (ITA) among other places.

Lemi Ponifasio, un artista del Pacífico que ha revolucionado nuestra comprensión del teatro y la danza reúne en el escenario a una cantante y compositora Mapuche y a una bailaora de flamenco para hablarnos sobre dos mundos a través de sus cuerpos e historias. Love to Death es una creación a través de la cual aborda temas que van desde el pueblo Mapuche hasta la naturaleza, la identidad femenina y el poder. Sus personajes centrales son dos mujeres que llevan al escenario su talento y cuerpos, herramientas que utilizan para hablarnos sobre las comunidades de las que provienen y, al mismo tiempo, sobre la historia y el futuro de Chile.
Desde el punto de vista técnico, esta es una obra con una visualidad muy precisa. La puesta en escena es escasa, solo hay dos intérpretes, un proyector y dos efectos escénicos; una “caída de vara LED” y un efecto de sangre de 10 litros. No hay margen para errores…
